Tips for late-career nurses and midwives
Nursing and midwifery are deeply rewarding careers — but they also bring challenges at every stage. Whether you’re just starting out or approaching retirement, looking after your wellbeing is essential.
Stay physically well
The demands of shift work and our physically intense roles increase as we age. Listening to your body becomes more important than ever — listen to those aches, attend to your fatigue or health concerns; don’t postpone it. Gentle exercise, stretching, good sleep routines, and balanced nutrition all help build resilience and energy for the long haul.
Manage your shift load
Shift work can feel tougher with age, but you may have more flexibility too. Many workplaces value experienced staff and will accommodate requests for shorter shifts, fewer nights, or more consistent rosters. Protecting your sleep, pacing yourself after demanding shifts, and giving yourself permission to rest are vital.
Reduce stress
To manage stress and find balance, think what you want from your career at this stage of life. Consider reducing hours, moving into a mentoring role, or shifting to less physically demanding work. Connections with colleagues, family, and friends are a buffer against stress. And hobbies and interests outside of work help to redefine your identity.
Prepare for the future
Review your superannuation, reduce debt where you can, and plan for security. Make sure you don’t forget joy — travel, hobbies, and time with loved ones will make retirement more fulfilling. Understand your long service leave entitlements or transition-to-retirement schemes to help make decisions about the future.
Be kind to yourself — you’ve given much to the profession, and you deserve rest and enjoyment.
