Habits build resilience
Habits can build resilience
1. 🌅 Anchor Your Day with a Few Keystone Habits
If safe to do so, stop for a moment.
Feel your feet solid on the floor and your shoulders drop.
Notice one thing you can see (perhaps a colour or object nearby), one thing you can hear (a sound on the ward), and one thing you can feel (the fabric of your uniform or the cool air).
2. 🔄 Build Flexibility into Your Routine (Not Perfection)
Shift work, emergencies and unpredictable workloads make rigid schedules hard to follow. Flexible routines—ones that work with your reality—are far more sustainable. Try gentle “time blocks” instead of minute-by-minute plans so you can choose what you need on the day.
Tip: Aim for 80% consistency. If routines shift, that’s okay—adaptability is part of resilience.
3. 🔔 Use Cues and Triggers to Make Habits Stick
Pairing new habits with something you already do makes them much easier to maintain. Drink water after brushing your teeth, or take three slow breaths before starting handover or logging into your computer.
Tip: Link the new habit to an old one. Over time, the cue will trigger the behaviour automatically.
4. 🌿 Protect Your Energy with Micro-Breaks
Resilience is also built in the tiny pauses throughout your day. Short breaks help reset your nervous system, reduce stress and improve focus—especially during demanding shifts.
Tip: Try the “50–10 rule”—50 minutes of focused work, then a 10-minute screen-free break. Adjust it to fit your workflow.
5. 🧭 Check In with Yourself and Adjust as You Go
Your routine should evolve as your life and workload change. Regular reflection helps you stay compassionate with yourself and supports routines that truly meet your needs.
Tip: Spend five minutes each week asking: What helps? What drains me? What small shift could make next week easier?
