Finding Joy at Work - Why It Matters
đź’› Why Joy Matters
As a nurse or a midwife, much of the day is spent caring for others. Between busy shifts, complex clinical situations, documentation and supporting patients and families, it can feel like there's little room for anything else.
It's easy to think that laughter, fun or moments of joy are something to save for your days off. But research tells us something different. Those small moments of connection, humour and enjoyment during the workday aren't distractions—they're actually good for your wellbeing.
When we're under constant pressure, our brains naturally focus on what's next, what could go wrong, or what still needs to be done. While this helps us respond to challenges, staying in this "always on" mode for long periods can leave us feeling mentally exhausted, emotionally drained and disconnected from the parts of work we once enjoyed.
Moments of joy help interrupt that cycle.
A shared laugh with a colleague, celebrating a patient's progress, enjoying your morning coffee, or taking a moment to appreciate something positive can help your mind and body reset. These experiences can improve perspective, increase resilience, strengthen teamwork and make it easier to cope with the demands of clinical work.
✨ Joy Doesn't Have to Be Big
You don't need hours of free time or a perfect shift to experience moments of joy. Often, it's the small things that make the biggest difference.
You might:
- Share a laugh with a colleague during handover.
- Celebrate a patient's recovery or a new baby's arrival.
- Take five minutes to enjoy your tea or coffee without multitasking.
- Step outside for fresh air during your break.
- Play your favourite music on the drive home.
- Acknowledge something that went well at the end of your shift.
- Thank a colleague or accept a compliment without brushing it aside.
These small moments help replenish emotional energy throughout the day.
🌱 Bring Curiosity Back Into Your Work
Healthcare is serious work, but that doesn't mean every moment has to feel heavy.
Being playful at work isn't about being unprofessional. It's about allowing yourself to be curious, flexible and connected.
This could look like:
- Finding a new way to organise your workflow.
- Learning a new clinical skill.
- Sharing ideas with colleagues.
- Taking an interest in getting to know new team members.
- Finding appropriate moments to smile or use humour to build connection with colleagues or patients.
These moments help create workplaces where people feel supported and connected.
🎉 Celebrate the Small Wins
We are often quick to notice what still needs doing but slow to acknowledge what they've already achieved.
At the end of your shift, ask yourself:
- What went well today?
- Who did I help today?
- What am I proud of?
- Did I make someone feel heard, safe or supported?
Not every shift will be perfect, but every shift usually contains something worth recognising.
🤝 Joy Supports Better Care
Looking after your wellbeing isn't separate from providing great patient care—it helps make it possible.
When healthcare professionals feel connected, supported and emotionally replenished, they're better able to communicate, solve problems, work as a team and provide compassionate care.
Finding moments of joy isn't about ignoring the challenges... It's about recognising that alongside the pressure, there can also be moments of laughter, connection, gratitude and meaning.
Those moments matter.
So the next time you share a laugh with a colleague, celebrate a small success or simply pause to take a breath, don't dismiss it as "just a moment."
It might be exactly what you need to help you get through the rest of your shift.
